The Benefits
Converting your premises in this way has various benefits:
- The existing vermiculite need not be removed or scraped off. This is a very messy and time consuming option.
- It offers the possibility of installing downlights. In these older units, conventional light fittings were originally installed. A drop ceiling creates the ceiling cavity necessary for the installation of downlights.
- The ceiling perimeter itself can be revamped with the installation of the owner’s choice of cornice; shadowline; or an equally modern square-set finish.
- It adds value to the dwelling particularly if the opportunity is taken to also modernize other internal elements of the unit – such as flooring, kitchen, bathroom, and wardrobes. An older unit can be visually transformed into the 21st century with such a makeover.
We get many queries for this line of work. Often from people who have just purchased an apartment, landlords that intend to occupy their vacated premises, or owners wishing to modernize their unit. Ideally, the work is carried out in vacated premises.

Vermiculite Ceiling Conversions
What is Vermiculite?
Vermiculite is a product that was commonly applied to the ceilings of apartments built from the 1960’s. Vermiculite has a textured, popcorn appearance, as shown on the image below – thus the term popcorn ceiling. The vermiculite served the function of concealing the imperfections of the concrete slabs it was applied to.
Its major drawback is aesthetic – it simply is not a pleasing look. Further, over the years it often discolours, becoming dull and dark. Repainting is possible, but this does nothing to remove its inherent ugliness.
It is because of this that many owners of these older units look for ways to cover or remove the unsightly eyesore that is a vermiculite ceiling.
Giving Your Apartment's Vermiculite Ceiling a Plasterboard Transformation
At Grand Acclaim Interiors we offer the possibility of converting an existing vermiculite ceiling by installing a false or drop plasterboard ceiling below the existing one.
Installation of the drop ceiling involves two steps. Firstly, the installation of rows of steel battens that form the surface onto which plasterboard sheets are fastened.
The second step involves the screwing of plasterboard sheets onto the grid. The plasterboard is then plaster-set and the ceiling perimeters are finished with the installation of cornice, shadowline or a square-set.
